5 Drinks to Try in 2012

2012 is the year to get adventurous with your choice of poison, and we're here to show you exactly where to begin with these 5 wicked libations!

Mezcal

Considering it's made from the same blue agave cactus that produces hallucinogenic drugs like peyote and mescaline, you know you're in for something special with this drink. Traditionally, it's consumed straight but sometimes it is accompanied with salt and a squeeze of lime or orange. It has a deliciously smoky flavor and is most definitely not designed for the faint of heart! If all the 2012 Doomsday prophecies come true, this seems like the right drink to get wasted on when the world is about the end!

Jagermeister
Probably the best thing to come out of Germany (yes, it's even better than German beers, sausages and pretzels!), Jagermeister has been growing in popularity over the last few years. It is renowned for ensuring you have no idea what your whereabouts were at the time of consumption!

You truly haven't lived till you've lost all bodily control after a couple of Jager shots or Jagerbombs

Sambuca
As far as party drinks go, nothing holds a candle to a round of Sambuca shots. And the only way to have those is straight up and flaming! It's an instant party-starter, and if you indulge in some of the better quality varieties, chances are your crusty-eyed hangover might just be bearable!

The most common variety is white sambuca, which is different from the deep blue or bright red ones. It is prepared by adding essential oils obtained from star anise and elder flowers and adding them to a pure, concentrated solution of alcohol.

 Arak
This Middle Eastern distilled alcoholic drink has become as infamous for its potency as it has for the milky white colour it turns when water is added to it. Made from grapes, sugar, plums, figs and molasses (depending on where it's being produced), it has earned the nickname 'the milk of lions.'

This drink usually contains anywhere between 30-60% alcohol. And unlike most other drinks, the stronger the arak, the better it tastes!

 Sake
If you're a sushi fan (how could you not be?) then chances are you're already well-acquainted with this Japanese rice wine they so lovingly refer to as 'nihonshu.' First distilled in Kyoto's royal palace around the 7th century, sake is all of the Japanese islands' favorite alcoholic drink!

This clear alcohol's taste varies from mild to fruity sweet, and it's best served slightly chilled. However, slightly heated sake is also very popular. Should you develop a taste for this delicious but potent traditional wine, there'll be no looking back!
